How the Etihad Guest card with walletplus™ works

The Etihad Guest card with walletplus™ currently supports 11 foreign currencies (including UAE Dirhams, your default currency). You can load money from your UAE bank account onto your Etihad Guest card with walletplus™ or through participating retail partners and convert it into the foreign currency of your choice. If you have a currency wallet loaded with money, and the purchase is in that currency, your walletplus™ account will recognise this and willautomatically take money from that currency wallet. If you’re using a currency that isn’t supported by walletplus™, you can still use walletplus™ to make purchases or withdraw cash from ATMs in that currency. Money will be drawn from your UAE Dirham wallet at the applicable conversion rate and a currency conversion fee will apply.

How to activate your Etihad Guest card with walletplus™

Once you receive your card, to start using walletplus™ you need to complete our online activation process.

  1. Select the 'activate my walletplus™' link on the website. If you are already logged in, you will be automatically directed to the walletplus™ account activation page.
  2. You’ll be prompted to verify your Etihad Guest card details and complete an online ID verification using your passport for security purposes. Please have your Etihad Guest card and passport on hand.
  3. Once your account is activated, you’ll be able to set up your account user name and password to start loading funds.

If you prefer, you can choose to complete the ID verification part of the activation process in person at any of the participating retail partners in the UAE. A full list of retail partners can be viewed here.

How to Add Funds

Load funds via your UAE Bank Account

You can load funds via your UAE Bank Account if your bank participates in the UAE FTS (UAE Funds Transfer System) network. This is an account-to-account funds transfer system of the United Arab Emirates, hosted by the Central Bank of the UAE. This system allows people to send money from one bank account to another quickly. Loads can only be completed in UAE Dirhams. To load your Etihad Guest with walletplus card via your Bank Account, follow these simple steps:

  1. Visit your bank’s online portal and search for the funds transfer option.
  2. Once selected, you will be prompted to ‘add a beneficiary account’ for the transfer to take place. In this case, you would need to enter your 16-digit walletplus prepaid card number in the transfer details.
  3. Select “Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank” as the issuing bank.
  4. Once this beneficiary account is setup, you are now ready to load funds from your UAE Bank account onto the Etihad Guest card with walletplus.
  5. Enter the amount of UAE Dirhams you want to load.

The transfer can take up to 3 business days. Check your walletplus account balance to make sure the load is correct. Once the loads are completed, you can now use your card wherever VISA is accepted.Please check your bank’s terms and policies related to fees charged to complete a bank account transfer.

Load at Al Fardan Exchange (cash only)

Load your Etihad Guest with walletplus account instantly at all Al Fardan Exchange locations in the UAE. Loads can only be completed in UAE Dirhams. Loading is as simple as taking the cash you would like to load to an Alfardan Exchange location near you. Before you load at Al Fardan Exchange, remember these tips: 

  1. Loads must be made in cash with UAE Dirhams
  2. You will need to bring your Etihad Guest card
  3. You will need to bring a valid Emirates ID.

The transfer will happen instantly. Check your walletplus account balance to make sure the load is correct. Once the loads are completed, you can now use your card wherever VISA is accepted.There is a nominal fee of AED 3.5 for every load completed at Al Fardan Exchange. For a list of outlets click here.

Using your card

Use your card to pay and withdraw cash from millions of merchants and ATMs around the world, all whilst earning miles. Gold and Platinum members can also make secure contactless payments using VisapayWave, by simply waving their card when prompted near a secure contactless reader.

A Visa Prepaid card is a re-loadable card that allows you to choose how much money you want to add, so you can only spend the money you have loaded onto it. It is not linked to your bank account and it doesn’t have a line of credit.  It keeps you in control of your own spending.

No, it’s a prepaid card. You must first load money onto your walletplus™ account before you can use your card to make purchases. You can load your walletplus™ account in UAE Dirhams by bank transfer or in person at the participating retail partner network.

Your walletplus™ card displays the date of expiry on it along with your Etihad Guest tier status. You will be issued a replacement card before your current one expires or when your tier status changes. When you receive your new replacement card you will first need to activate it before you can use the walletplus™ features. Your old card will be deactivated and you will be able to access the walletplus™ account features using your replacement card.

If you do not wish to activate your walletplus functionality you can continue using your Etihad Guest card without activating your walletplus™ functionality.

 Load funds to your walletplus™ account by bank transfer or at any participating retail locations near you.

To Manage Wallets:

 Move money into other currencies on your walletplus™ account, online or via the mobile application. You have 11 currencies to choose from.

To Shop:

 Use it at millions of VISA™ merchants worldwide online or offline, including ATMs, or send money from your mobile phone to other walletplus members with an activated walletplus account.

If you have provided a correct address, you should receive your card within 14 business days. You will then need to activate the walletplus™ features for you to be able to use the payment functionality.

When you turn 21, you will automatically be sent a new Etihad Guest card with walletplus™ features to your preferred postal address which appears in your Etihad Guest Account, as long as you are an Etihad Guest Silver, Gold or Platinum member. Yes definitely. It works in the same way as a debit card or credit card when making purchases online.

When you make a purchase, walletplus™ will automatically use the currency of the country in which the transaction is made, if you have money available in that currency.

If the currency is a supported currency, but you do not have that currency wallet loaded, or if you have insufficient funds in that currency wallet, your account will take the funds from the first or next currency wallet you have selected in your currency Order. 

For example, if you are making a purchase for USD$150 in the US, then walletplus™ will automatically look to withdraw money from your USD wallet. If you haven’t transferred money into the wallet of the local currency, then your walletplus™ account by default will look to withdraw money from your UAE Dirham wallet.

Can I use walletplus™ in a country that doesn’t use a supported walletplus™ currency?

Yes, you can use walletplus™ for transactions in almost all countries. If you make a purchase in a country in which walletplus™ doesn’t support the currency, i.e. Fijian Dollars, your account will first look to draw from your UAE Dirham wallet.

In each case in an unsupported currency, your account will first deduct funds from your UAE Dirham wallet.

What will happen if I want to make a purchase with walletplus™ but the value of it exceeds the remaining balance I have in the local currency wallet?

If the value of the purchase exceeds the remaining balance in the local currency wallet, but you have enough money in your account, we will enable the transaction, or ATM withdrawal to precede drawing on money from your other active wallets in the order you’ve selected.

We recommend that you move funds to the supported currency you are planning to use.  For example, if you intend travelling to the United States we recommend you transfer money into US Dollars. You can transfer money between currency wallets at your walletplus™ account. If you don’t move money into the local currency prior to travelling, you can still make purchases, however money will be drawn from other active wallets for supported currencies or the UAE Dirham wallet for unsupported currencies.

Yes, your card will work at ATMs that accept Visa prepaid cards. You will need to ensure you have sufficient money available in your account to cover the withdrawal amount and any applicable fee, and that you enter the correct PIN.  There are some countries that have close loop or restricted ATM’s such as Japan and in those cases you should look for an ATM that is located at a post office or Seven Eleven.

Yes. You can only withdraw the currency in which the ATM of that particular country dispenses.

You can withdraw a limit of $2500 within a 24 hour cycle, or the equivalent in foreign currency. Some ATM operators may impose lesser limits.

walletplus™ offers highly competitive exchange rates by working with specialist foreign exchange providers. Rates are updated continually to ensure you get the best rates at the time of your transfer. You can get a quote or view up-to-date exchange rates by logging in to your walletplus™ account and selecting Manage Wallets.

When you make a purchase walletplus™ will automatically look to draw on the local currency if there are available funds. If you do not have sufficient funds to cover the total purchase amount, walletplus™ will look to see if there are funds available in your other active wallets. If there is, funds will be automatically moved to the local currency wallet to enable the transaction.

If you have money in multiple wallets in your account you can login to your walletplus™ account to change the order in which currencies are drawn from. If the local currency is not supported by walletplus™, the transaction will be applied to your UAE Dirham wallet.  Money will be automatically transferred from other currencies to your UAE Dirham wallet if there are not enough funds already to complete the transaction.
